The bold patterns and schemes of the Victorian era are a grand testament to the architects and designers of the industrial age. Drawing inspiration from the magnificent gothic buildings of the middle ages, the vogue of mid-19th Century tiling was high decoration and a spectrum of stunning colour.
Often alongside these opulent and showy patterns were installed eye catching monochromatic schemes that did not carry such a high price tag. The black and white chequerboard, a popular choice for its versatility, had already then been used and referenced throughout history in a multitude of architectural settings.
